About

Balashi Ghat is a prominent riverside tourist destination and historic river port situated along the vast banks of the mighty Jamuna River in Kanchipara Union, under Phulchhari Upazila—roughly 10 kilometers east of Gaibandha district town. Historically, this site holds monumental significance in Bangladesh's transport history. Originally established in 1938 by the British as Tistamukh Ghat, it was relocated in 1990 to Balashi due to siltation and river navigability issues. Before the construction of the Jamuna Bridge, Balashi Ghat served as the key northern transit hub, operating one of the world's few full-train railway ferry services (capable of carrying entire train carriages across 13 tracks onto massive river ferries to Bahadurabad Ghat in Jamalpur). Today, Balashi Ghat has evolved into one of Northern Bangladesh's most scenic eco-tourism spots. During the monsoon, the Jamuna swells into an ocean-like sea with rolling waves, while in winter, vast sandy riverbeds (chars) emerge, creating a picturesque desert-like landscape. Visitors flock here to enjoy engine-boat cruises, horse-drawn cart rides across the sandbars, sunset views over the water horizon, and fresh river fish delicacies served at local ghat eateries.
