About

Balia Mosque, locally famously known as Balia Jinn Mosque, is a historic and architecturally extraordinary early 20th-century mosque located in Balia Union under Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila, approximately 15 kilometers edge from Thakurgaon district town. Built during the British colonial era, construction began around 1910 under the patronage of local landlord Zamindar Meher Bakhsh Chowdhury and his wife Gulmati Chowdhury. The architecture represents a captivating mix of Mughal style, Persian influence, and terracotta relief designs. The structure stands elevated on a raised platform, featuring three main domes, intricate floral relief work, geometric patterns, and distinctive tall minarets at the corners. However, following the sudden death of Zamindar Meher Bakhsh Chowdhury in 1910 and subsequent disputes, the main dome construction remained incomplete for nearly a century. Local myths and folklore arose claiming that supernatural entities or 'Jinns' constructed the mosque in a single night but left it incomplete before dawn, leading to its famous name 'Jinn Mosque'. In 2010, after remaining abandoned and roofless for 100 years, descendants of the Zamindar family, along with local heritage enthusiasts, initiated a comprehensive restoration project. Re-construction used authentic lime mortar, burnt brick dust (surki), and handcrafted tiles, successfully crowning the structure with its planned domes and fully restoring it for active daily prayers and community gatherings.
